Fall Flag

The other day I saw this post for a Fall Pillow.  My husband is not a pillow guy.  He doesn't like to have them on the couch or chairs.  I knew I couldn't make this into a pillow for my house, so I thought I'd make it into a Fall Flag!

I needed to start out with some material.  So I went shopping - at Goodwill of course!  We have one 2.5 miles from our house.  It seriously takes 5 minutes to get there.  (As opposed to Jo-Ann's which is 7 miles and 20 minutes away)  I found this package of cloth napkins.  They are 20 x 20 inches.

If you look close the price tag says $2.99... but... it was yellow tag day so I paid $1.50 for my package of 4 napkins.  I only needed one so... that makes my piece of material $0.375!  I can handle that!  And... it's already hemmed on all four sides!  Woo Hoo!

(Please excuse the photos.  ALL of the batteries for our camera are dead!  How does that happen?  I used my cell phone to take the photos.)

I used our spring time flag to measure what I needed for the top "rod" hole and how wide I need it to be. I then ironed the napkin to the needed measurements.

After which I went to my Silhouette program on my computer and found a tree, a couple of leaves, and "Fall is in the air" saying to download.

I decided I didn't want my tree to be so "branchy" so I opted to edit it...

I used mostly the "Eraser" but I also used the "Edit Points" option.

In this picture is the end result of my editing the tree and the "Fall is in the air" saying being ready to cut on the brown vinyl from Expressions Vinyl. (Edited I used the iron-on T Shirt Vinyl)

The leaves are waiting on the side to be cut in the other colors

See how you can easily read "Fall is in the air"??  Ya... well... you shouldn't be able to read it easily when you're cutting it out of vinyl.  At this point it should be flipped so it appears to be backwards... I realized it after I cut it out... so I had to re-cut it.  (Dang!  I know better too!)

The orange vinyl is from Expressions Vinyl, the yellow (flocked) and the red is from Silhouette.  I removed the 'negative' parts of the vinyl from the leaves, the tree and saying.  (There are some extra orange leaves because the first time I cut out attempted to cut out the leaves and for whatever reason the machine slipped on the vinyl so it didn't feed through properly.  Please do not get me started on my problems with printers I've had lately... it is not a pretty story... I just chalked it up to a continuation of that story.)

I proceeded to layout the tree and words on the napkin

One thing that Kaysi mentions on the post here is that she uses multi-use paper from Expressions Vinyl.  I don't have any of that paper, but I do have the brown craft paper that comes in boxes used as packing.  So I thought I'd try that out!

I pulled the plastic backing off the tree and the words.  I then proceeded with the leaves.  I pulled the leaves off the plastic backing and laid them on the scene so I could iron them all at once.  I made sure that what would have been the plastic side was face up and the other side faced the fabric.  I didn't want all those pretty leaves sticking to the paper!

After I was done ironing the vinyl I started sewing (what little bit of sewing I had to do).  I tacked down the edges from the top to above where the scissors are.  I didn't want the flag rod to get stuck in the 'pocket' that would be created by folding the edges in.

I just guesstimated by looking at the top edge to the fold how far I should sew.  I wasn't too far off!

I then sewed from side to side on the bottom edge of what was folded over to create a pocket (the same width as what was on the spring flag I used for measuring).

It's nice to have a bit of fall color here in southern Arizona we don't have a lot of opportunity to see the fall colors.
